Static vs dynamic QR codes
Last updated: 6 July 2026
Static QR codes store the data inside the image — they work forever and offline, but can't be changed. Dynamic QR codes store a short link that redirects to a destination you can edit after printing, and they record scan analytics — but they rely on a service and need a subscription. Pick static when it must last forever; pick dynamic when it must be editable or measurable.
The difference in one look
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| What's in the code | The data itself | A short redirect link |
| Editable after printing | No | Yes |
| Expires | Never | If the plan/service ends |
| Works offline | Yes | No |
| Scan analytics | No | Yes |
| Cost | Free on 123smith | Subscription (from $5/mo) |
Use static when…
- It's printed for keeps — a business-card vCard, a plaque, packaging, signage.
- You want zero ongoing cost and zero risk of it ever breaking.
- The destination won't change (a phone number, a permanent link).
Use dynamic when…
- The destination will change — a seasonal menu, a rotating campaign, a link you'll update.
- You want scan analytics (approximate location + device, privacy-respecting).
- You'd rather reprint never and edit often.
What "dynamic" costs — and what happens if you cancel
On 123smith, dynamic codes start at $5/mo (3 codes), with Unlimited at $12/mo and Teams at $29/mo. If you cancel, codes keep redirecting for a 30-day grace period, then pause to a reactivate page — never an ad or a dead 404. More on whether QR codes expire.
Not sure? Start with a free static code. You can always add a dynamic code later.

Static codes are generated on your device — nothing is uploaded. For dynamic codes we record only aggregate, privacy-respecting scan data and never sell it. See the privacy policy.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
Static codes contain the data and never change or expire; dynamic codes contain a redirect link you can edit after printing and that tracks scans, but they need a subscription and a live service.
Are static QR codes free?
On 123smith, yes — unlimited and no account. Dynamic codes are the paid option because they run on a server.
Can I convert a static code to dynamic?
No — the type is fixed at generation. To switch, make a new dynamic code and reprint.
Do dynamic QR codes expire?
They stop redirecting if the plan/service ends (with a 30-day grace on 123smith). Static codes never expire.
When should I use a dynamic QR code?
When the destination might change after printing, or when you need scan analytics.
