Do QR codes expire?
Last updated: 6 July 2026
Static QR codes do not expire. The destination is encoded directly into the image, so the code keeps working as long as the printed square is readable and the destination still exists — no server, no subscription. Dynamic QR codes can stop working, because they point to a short link that a service redirects; if that subscription or account is disabled, the redirect breaks.
Why some QR codes stop working
Not all QR codes are the same. The type decides whether it can ever "expire":
- Static codes carry the data themselves — the contact card, link, WiFi details or text is written into the pattern of black-and-white squares. Scanning reads it straight off the image. There is nothing to switch off.
- Dynamic codes carry only a short link back to the generator's servers, which then redirect to your real destination. That indirection is powerful — you can change the destination after printing — but it also means the code only works while that redirect is kept alive.
Many "free" QR generators quietly hand you a dynamic code, then start charging (or shut the code off) once you've printed it on a thousand business cards. That's the expiry trap.
Static vs dynamic QR codes
| Static | Dynamic | |
|---|---|---|
| Expires? | Never | If the service/plan stops |
| Works offline | Yes | No — needs the redirect |
| Editable after printing | No | Yes |
| Scan analytics | No | Yes |
| Needs an account/subscription | No | Yes |
| Best for | Business cards, badges, signage, anything printed for keeps | Campaigns, menus, links you'll update or want to measure |
What happens when a 123smith dynamic plan is canceled
We designed cancellation to be humane. If you cancel a paid dynamic plan, your codes keep redirecting for a 30-day grace period, then pause to a friendly "reactivate" page — never an ad, never a dead 404. Resubscribe and they're instantly live again. And because your free static codes never relied on our servers, they're completely unaffected.
How to make a QR code that keeps working after printing
If you're printing something that has to last — a business card, a plaque, product packaging — use a static code and encode the final destination directly. On 123smith every free code is static by default, generated on your device, with nothing uploaded.
Make a QR code that never expires. Free, static, on your device — contact cards, links, WiFi and more.

Dynamic isn't bad — it's a different tool. Use it when the destination will change (a seasonal menu, a rotating promo, a link you're not sure of yet) or when you want scan analytics. Just go in knowing it's a subscription and the code depends on it. 123smith offers both, and we never sell your scan data.
Frequently asked questions
Do free QR codes expire?
Free static QR codes don't expire — the destination is baked into the image, so they work as long as the printed code is scannable and the destination still exists. 123smith's free codes are static.
Can a QR code stop working after printing?
A static code can't stop on its own. A dynamic code can, because it relies on a redirect service — if the plan or provider behind it is disabled, the code breaks.
Why did my QR code stop working?
Usually it was a dynamic code whose plan lapsed, or the generator shut down the redirect. Static codes only fail if the image is damaged or the destination no longer exists.
Do static QR codes need a subscription?
No. Static codes need no server and no subscription. On 123smith you can make unlimited static codes free, with no account.
What happens if I cancel a dynamic plan?
Your dynamic codes keep redirecting for a 30-day grace period, then pause to a reactivate page (never an ad). Resubscribe and they're live again. Static codes are unaffected.
Can I edit a QR code after printing?
Only a dynamic code can be edited after printing — you change where its short link points. A static code's destination is fixed once generated.
